Madagascar Fashion
Many women in Madagascar wear something called
"kanga" which are colorful scarves that can be used for anything.
Women mostly wear them for the because of the vibrant colors, but also for the
message that is on them. In the early 1850s, women would buy little pieces of
fabric called “leso.” When women would
buy these, they would sew little squares together to form a big, beautiful
pattern.
In the 1920s, people would add Arabic script to the bottom of the cloth. These could also include proverbs, greetings or popular sayings as well. Nowadays women can just buy the big, beautiful scarves and wear them over their full bodies, over their heads, or as a skirt. Shoes aren’t really worn in Madagascar so people walk around bare foot.
